Historic Milestone Achieved as Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway Section Nears Completion

Exciting progress is underway on the highly anticipated Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway, as the construction of its final tunnels reaches significant milestones. The railway, which spans 139.7 kilometers from Lijiang to Shangri-La in the northwest of Yunnan Province, is set to transform transportation accessibility in the region and open up new opportunities for economic development.

The completion of the challenging Haiba Snowy Mountain Tunnel, situated at a maximum depth of 1,155 meters, marks a crucial achievement for the railway project. Overcoming formidable obstacles such as high geostress, weak surrounding rock formations and the risk of large deformations, the tunnel has been hailed as one of the most challenging soft-rock deformation tunnels in the world. The arduous nine-year construction process witnessed numerous technical innovations and the tireless efforts of China Railway 16th Bureau Group.

With a deep understanding of the geotechnical complexities, the construction team employed advanced techniques to mitigate risks and ensure stability. These included the implementation of multiple layers of initial support, the introduction of large-diameter anchor pipes and the addition of three-dimensional steel reinforcement to address arch deformation concerns. The groundbreaking approach of excavating a smaller middle adit before enlarging it to the final tunnel section proved effective in releasing ground stress and reducing deformations.

The completion of the Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway section holds immense significance for the region. Once operational, it will end the isolation of the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, providing vital rail connectivity and facilitating the development of tourism and economic opportunities. The railway’s maximum operating speed of 140 kilometers per hour will ensure efficient transportation and enable the region to leverage its rich resources and cultural heritage.

This milestone achievement underscores the commitment of the government to advancing transportation infrastructure in remote and challenging terrains. The Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway project exemplifies China’s engineering prowess, innovation and determination to overcome difficult geological conditions.

As the construction progresses, the railway is expected to enhance regional connectivity, boost tourism and contribute to the overall development and revitalization of minority-inhabited areas in Yunnan Province. The completion of the railway section is eagerly anticipated, bringing the dream of a connected and prosperous northwest Yunnan closer to reality.
